After two disappointing losses within their division, the Topballerz have regained traction and control of their division. With back-to-back wins against two very worthy opponents, the Topballerz are once again illustrating why they are the favorite to not only win their division, but also compete for the National Championship.
Led by an inspired Kelvin Davis and his 33 points and 12 rebounds, the Topballerz jumped out to an early lead against the Connecticut All-stars (a team comprised of the best-remaining talent in all of Connecticut). As they established leads which reached 18 points at times, the Topballerz put on a show for the capacity-filled gymnasium. Whether it was one of their 12 3-pointers (6 for John Winchester) or an alley-oop pass on the fast break off the glass, the Topballerz illustrated why they are one of the most talented/athletic teams in all of the ABA. The final score of the game was 123-115 Topballerz, but was no way indicative of how in-control the Topballerz were from start to finish!
Coach Jim Cornish stated that “our team is remarkably athletic. However, it’s not just the athleticism that allows us to win games, but the combination of athleticism, basketball knowledge, hard work and a well-rounded/talented group of players which makes us a team that no one wants to face. When we are running on all cylinders and truly ‘clicking,’ I believe that we are unstoppable!”
From point guard to big man, the Topballerz continue to impress their fans and opponents. They run 11 deep and oftentimes can put out any five players on the floor and compete if not beat any team within their division. They boast several players which can play upwards of 4 positions on the floor; a rarity for ANY team in any league. Like most teams in their first season, the Topballerz have yet to realize their own potential, but WHEN they do, a National Championship goes from a possibility to a guarantee!
Other notables from the game include:
Jamual Warren – 14 pts, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals
John Winchester – 7 for 10 from the field, 6 of 9 from 3-pt range
Roosevelt Lee – 16 pts and 6 rebounds
The Topballerz look to continue their run through the Northeast Division against defending division champion, NJ Express, away on December 30th. Then, on January 7th, the Topballerz will return home against the Staten Island Vipers as they attempt to avenge their previous loss to them.
